Today is my last day on staff at the LA Weekly/Village Voice.
I was hired at the LA Weekly as Film Editor/Critic almost exactly 3 years ago. Today, I’m stepping down from my position as staff writer. I’ll still contribute to the Weekly and its sister papers as a freelancer.
This was entirely my decision, it was a long time coming, and the factors that went into it were primarily personal. For some time I’ve been itching to try new things, to write for additional venues and in formats I’m not practiced in. I read many film critics with awe and admiration, but I also idolize great cultural reporters and profile writers — David Carr, Scott Raab, Vanessa Grigoriadis, Mark Harris, Alex Pappademas. To mix baseball metaphors, I was contemplating free agency, while also interested in the idea of becoming less of a specialist, and more of a utility player. Then, a book project came along that I couldn’t turn down, and I decided it was time to make the leap.
Said book will be my priority for the next couple of months, but I’m definitely open to discussing any and all projects and short-term opportunities. I’m not looking for a full-time job, simply because there are too many things I want to do: stories I want to write, experiments I want to try, museums and archives and cities I want to visit, piles of books I want to read. I want to help foster film culture by doing things other than writing weekly movie reviews. I’m increasingly interested in preservation, in terms of physical archives, but also history: there are so many stories about films and filmmakers that haven’t been sufficiently told, or even put on the record at all. And, I want to write about things other than movies: art, books, fashion, food, television. Maybe — somehow, someway — I could put my obsessive interest in the Los Angeles Dodgers to good use. I have a lot of ideas. I want to challenge myself, and (cheeseball alert) learn new things every day.
