Blogademia, 9/11 Jokes, Jenny Craig: Sliding Scale 4/09/07
April 9th, 2007

- Another sign that bloggery and academia are moving closer together: On Saturday, in a blog post at Salon, Glenn Greenwald cited hypocrisy amongst conservative bloggers like Glenn Reynolds and Michael Ledeen, for first lamenting the U.S.’s “failure to exterminate all Sunni men between the ages of 15 and 35″, and then accusing the left the Left of dismissing Iraqi civilians as “untermenschen” who deserve what they get. By the end of the weekend, Greenwald’s blog post had sparked an extra credit assignment for World History and Islamic Civ students at a Canadian university. From blog spat to higher education in under 48 hours? Think that’s a record.
- Did the New York Times only bother paying attention to Jimmy Wales and Tim O’Reilly’s “bloggers code of conduct” in order to have an excuse to backhand the blogosphere once again? Jeff Jarvis writes: “So O’Reilly only set us up to be called nasty, unmannered, and thus uncivilized hooligans. Except for Tim, of course. He’s the nice one. Me, I feel like the goth kid with premature tattoos skulking down the hall.”
- Uwe Boll–yes, that director guy who challenged internet film critics to a boxing match, at which he totally kicked ass–has released a teaser for his new “shock comedy”, Postal, containing “footage that looks a lot like a victim’s-eye-view of the 9/11 attacks.”
- The Sunset Strip is losing party traffic to the newly revitalized areas east of LaBrea. Could those $12 40s be part of the problem?
- Kirstie Alley is starting to rope her fellow has-been friends into the Jenny Craig racket. I saw the first Valerie Bertinelli spot this morning, and I have to say, I’m slightly fascinated by this phenomena: middle-aged former sex symbols who have to submit to the humiliation of public weight loss in order to gain entry back into the public eye. There’s a great Women’s Studies paper in there somewhere–if Laura Kipnis had a blog, I’d tag her to respond.
